LOOKING AHEAD: FALL 2020

Despite the undoubtedly weird and strange year we have all had, time is passing us by. Before we know it, fall will be upon us, considering we might actually have one this year. With the changing of the year comes the usual rituals: the back to school shopping, pulling out sweaters and leather jackets, winter boots and scarves. This year, however, things are different.

While the normal signifiers of Fall might not exist this particular year, now is a good time to consider your home. Maybe it’s changing your decor or accessories in your space to signal a new season. Or perhaps you’re ready to change it up, with DIY projects, a new paint color or two, and anything else that will help make you feel like you’re at least somewhere new. If this sounds like you, read on for design tips and trends to help you consider as we approach a new season:

  • Add wallpaper. These days, you don’t need to call the handyman. With do-it-yourself wallpaper available at many large retailers, like CB2 and West Elm, it’s possible to find quality wallpaper at relatively inexpensive prices. For an added spice, check out this new line by Jupiter10 that features modern takes on classic design motifs.

  • Switch up your layout. Always a reliable option. Try and switch up your placement of standard items, like rearranging your side tables, or other modular items.

  • Swap out bedding and linen. Lighter colors are the norm in the warmer months - try and switch it up with rich, velvety tones and hues for the coming colder months.

  • Indulge in textiles. Similar to switching up bedding and linen, adding in versatile textile covers and throws can help change your space in a relatively inexpensive way. Consider adding textiles to the top of surfaces or tables for a new look, and look to companies like Bemz for easy slipcovers that can be used on existing pieces.

  • Be resourceful. The beginning of quarantine saw the creation of lots of DIY projects and splurges on home trends and gadgets. With the newfound products, style your space with a mix of old and new - bring things out that might be sitting in closets, or stuck behind various other items.

  • Get the details right. Consider switching out door handles, knobs and buttons for a detailed touch that elevates any space. Brass, antique or stainless steel are chic options that can easily be replaced at a relatively inexpensive cost for any furniture piece.

  • Layer it up. Can’t decide which rug you want? Or maybe you like your existing one, but want to add something new. Layer your rugs on top of one another for texture, plus extra coziness as the days get colder. A great example is a natural jute layered with a traditional Persian on top. Just make sure to keep the base rug larger.

  • Play up your space with art. Adding that final touch to help create a real space. Consider purchasing textiles or tapestries to add to your walls, or plates and baskets that can create decorative displays. These pieces from Jungalow are perfect for just that. If gallery walls are your thing, consider a picture ledge - it can be less costly, and small ornaments can be added to the display as well.

By no means comprehensive, the above details and ways to change up your space are great for a change of seasons, and even year round. Remember to have fun - this is your home!
